Cape Town Jimny 4×4 Club Event
On the Sunday morning of 16 January 2022, sixteen Jimny contestants set out to Zevenwacht Wine Estate for a Family Fun Day in-between the vineyards. On arrival we were greeted by a slight drizzle, leading us to believe that we are in for some nice cool weather on the farm, but boy-oh-boy, were we wrong!
The first challenge started the fun at 09:00 – Wheel Change: The contestants had to remove the front right wheel of their vehicle, grab the wheel and run around Oubaas the Jimny, back to their vehicles where they had to put the wheel back on and whoever did this in the shortest amount of time was declared the winners of the first challenge. By the time all the contestants had their bearings in place, the sun was already belting down.
It wasn’t long before a bunch of sunblock-covered faces started popping up all around. The food-trucks were bustling with contestants and spectators getting something cool to drink and a bite to curb the hunger.
The next challenge, Blindemol, left everyone laughing as the co-pilot guided a blindfolded-driver through an obstacle with the words Lefts and Right replaced with Jimny and Zook. After that, the sixteen Jimny Teams set out to the Sand Track followed by two Medics, and about thirty spectator vehicles. Sand Sarel, the third challenge of the day, was a timed challenge where contestants had to drive a loose sand section, stop halfway for the co-pilot to get out and throw a dart, get back in the vehicle and get to the finish line as fast as possible. The score on the dartboard was then subtracted from the time it took to complete the challenge. After Sand Sarel we headed back to the food stands for a proper Burger and Chips before we set out to King of the Koppie, the challenge that had most of the drivers, spectators, and co-drivers on the edge of their seats. It’s a rocky decent where the contestants had to navigate their own way down the obstacle, with points allocated for line choice, co-pilot guidance (teamwork), and throttle control. There were three marshals along the obstacle allocating a score and keeping a watchful eye on things, ready to step in and assist when needed.
The final two challenges were the most fun!
With Slakkepas the contestants had to drive up a 30° slope as slow as possible without losing forward momentum for more than 3 seconds. Last, but not least, was a fan favorite in the heat – Waterbaby, where the contestants were given a bucket of water and had to navigate their way through an Axle twister Obstacle. The winning team would be the team that had the most water in the bucket at the end of the obstacle. A lot of laughter and fun was had as the water spilled onto the co-pilot whilst the driver navigates through the challenge.
After all the challenges were done the marshals got together to calculate the scores and deliberate. Everyone walked away with something! A prize was given to the winner of each obstacle and then overall prizes for the position the contestants ended in. Big names in the 4×4 industry took hands and made this family fun day possible by sponsoring huge prizes and giving up their time to assist on the day.
